Castaway Wanderers Partners with BC Grassroots Rugby to Host Summer Rugby Camp at Windsor Park
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Oak Bay, BC – August 7th, 2024 – The Castaway Wanderers Rugby Club joined forces with BC Grassroots Rugby Foundation to host an engaging Summer Rugby Camp at Windsor Park from August 5th to 9th, 2024. The camp, designed for young athletes eager to develop their rugby skills, emphasized a unique approach to learning that built confidence and fostered a passion for the game.
Running daily from 9am to 3pm, the camp was led by four experienced coaches, some of whom played for Canada, engaged with the kids all week to make their rugby experience nothing but the best. The way in which BC Grassroots rugby coaches interact with their camp participants is second to none. Whilst speaking to one of the coaches this week, it was clear to see that they approach the camp by allowing participants to gradually build their rugby skills without feeling overwhelmed.
“We like to focus on progressive learning in regards to grasping new skills,” explained Mariam Ibrahim, a former University of Victoria Rugby player and current Psychology major. “We complete similar drills and exercises throughout the week but add various challenges. This covers passing, tackling, bag work, footwork, kicking, and many other skills, ensuring a comprehensive overview of the game.”
The primary goal of the camp is to ignite a lasting passion for rugby among the young participants. The program was structured not only to teach the fundamentals of the game but also to open doors to future opportunities, as rugby has done for many.
Mariam shared her thoughts on the importance of initiatives like this camp. "I think it's a great way to grow the game from a young age. For me, rugby has opened up so many opportunities, and we want the same for these kids."
The camp received positive feedback from its participants. Alex, one of the young athletes who attended and a current member of Castaway Wanderers Rugby Club, expressed her enthusiasm: "The most fun part of the camp for me was seeing all the different levels of rugby skills improve together. I definitely learned a lot of things that I didn't know before. It was really fun to learn the game."
When asked if she would recommend the camp to her friends or teammates, Alex responded with a resounding "Yes, definitely!"
The partnership between Castaway Wanderers and British Columbia Grassroots Rugby Foundation aimed to enhance rugby skills and foster a love for the sport within the community.
