BC Grassroots Rugby Foundation’s Summer Camps are in Full Flight, Marked by Successful Event at Juan de Fuca Recreation Cetnre

Juan de Fuca, BC - July 15, 2024 - The British Columbia Grassroots Rugby Foundation is delighted to announce the success of their latest event, held on Monday, July 15th, at the Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre. The event saw enthusiastic participation from 16 children aged 5 - 12, marking a fantastic start to the week with foundational rugby training and fun-filled activities.

The session was led by a group of dedicated coaches who embody the spirit of the grassroots rugby development. A couple of which, Taylor Morrison, a rugby player currently studying Sciences at the University of Victoria, and Belle Rousseau, a high school student and rugby player at Royal Bay Secondary School, summarized the event’s activities and games.

The event was characterized by a perfect balance of learning and fun. With 16 kids in attendance, the coaches were thrilled to have even numbers, which made the session more dynamic and engaging. The typical attendance ranges from 15-20 participants, with some camps attracting as many as 30 young rugby enthusiasts.

As it was the first day of the week-long camp, the focus was on laying a strong foundation for the sport. The activities were designed to introduce the children to the basics of rugby, including passing and catching, communication, spatial awareness, and understanding directions. The non-contact nature of the camp ensured safety, with flags being used instead of traditional tackling.

Both Taylor and Belle, as well as the rest of the coaching staff, took turns leading the sessions, utilizing their "big voice" coaching technique to keep the kids motivated and energized. The emphasis was on creating a fun and welcoming environment where children could develop a passion for rugby while learning essential skills.

The Value of British Columbia Rugby Grassroots Foundation

The British Columbia Rugby Grassroots Foundation aims to provide children with a positive introduction to the game of rugby. By offering camps like the one held at Juan de Fuca Recreation Center, the foundation helps instill a love for the sport and equips young players with the knowledge and skills they need to transition smoothly into club or middle school rugby programs. The focus on foundational skills and fun ensures that children not only learn the game but also develop a lifelong appreciation for physical activity and teamwork.
